 Job Purpose Summary:

The Controls Engineer will be responsible for supporting ongoing efforts to improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of all production assets in APNA including Fowlerville, MI and Athens, AL. The Controls engineer will report to the TBD and work closely with cross functional teams to ensure the plants run safely, reliably and produce the highest quality material possible. With a lead focus on controls systems upgrades and support, the engineer will ensure that targets for asset reliability and efficiency are achieved. The Controls engineer will also support numerous capital improvement projects from inception to implementation aimed at improving the safety and reliability of operations through control system upgrades.  As the Controls engineer for APNA, the Controls engineer will have responsibility for setting the overall controls strategy for all APNA production sites.

 Working Conditions:

  • It is expected this person to have a balance between "hands on" work in the field as well as office environment
  • Travel domestically and internationally: up to 20%

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot, install, help repair, and configure process control equipment such as variable speed AC drives, analog valve positioners, Allen Bradley PLCs, Siemens controls systems and I/O modules
  • Must have the ability to write PLC programs, troubleshoot existing controls systems, and modify ladder logic
  • Must have extensive knowledge of testing and working with electrical switching devices such as, relays, timers, starters and solenoids
  • Will work closely with cross functional teams to develop a detailed time line for control systems upgrades across numerous production lines and productions sites
  • Implements and maintains standardization of controls systems across production lines and production sites where it makes sense for the business.
  • Assist in the professional development and cross training of maintenance technicians with primary focus on controls and instruments.
  • Lead Root cause investigations and failure mode analysis into controls and instrument reliability problems to implement counter measures to prevent recurrence
  • Help define and implement best practices learned from the Asahi Kasei Chemical Corporation compounding organization
  • Research test and develop innovative solutions to improve, efficiencies and reliability of plant operations
  • Provides input to a risk management plan that will anticipate reliability-related and non-reliability-related risks that could adversely impact plant operations.
  • Help optimize production rates and quality on existing production lines by utilizing new control systems, sensor protection devices, and continuous equipment monitoring equipment
  • Be active in promoting Environmental, Health Safety and Quality. Lead by example, show positive attributes in these areas daily.
  • Implement measurements and data logging capability to help support and prioritize future capital investments as well as reliability improvements.

Qualifications (Education, Experience, Licensures and Certifications):

  • Minimum: BS in Engineering or 5-10 years' experience in PLC controls systems / electrical maintenance
  • Extensive project management experience and problem-solving skills to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience with extruders, temperature controls systems, motor drive systems, and material conveyance systems would be a plus.
