Applications Development Engineer

Job Purpose Summary:

 

The Application Development Engineer position is responsible for translating the needs of customers into viable thermoplastic compounds by advancing the product and application development efforts of APNA. The applicant must understand the fundamentals of polymer properties, compounding, molding and material selection as well as mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties of thermoplastics along with the associated test methodology.

 

Key Responsibilities: (8-15)

  1. Assess customer needs and select materials from current portfolio to align the right polymer compound for optimal application performance
  2. Develop and validate new products to meet specific performance requirements (fit, form, function)
  3. Be responsible for supporting the assigned commercial & customer accounts with efficient project management and communication
  4. Develop a thorough knowledge of product portfolio and participate in technical marketing activities as required
  5. Understanding of new raw materials and additives for use in current and developmental compounds
  6. Design experiments understanding to qualify new concepts and prove theories
  7. Work with internal and external resources to generate, organize, and assemble test data to meet customer requirements and promote APNA's technologies
  8. Apply reporting and presentation skills to effectively relay pertinent technical and developmental information to management and customers
  9. Utilize a fundamental understanding of the compounding process, along with plastic fabrication processes including injection molding, thermoforming, and extrusion
  10. Ability to travel as required for customer trials and meetings

Qualifications (Education, Experience, Licensures and Certifications):

 

  • Education: Polymer, Material Science or Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or other relevant plastics-focused degree; 3-5 yrs.+ related industrial experience preferred, most preferably in automotive plastics
  • Preferred: Industry experience in Compounding, Automotive, or Industrial Plastics Fields; Plastic Part Design and Failure Analysis background; Second language skills (Spanish, Japanese, Chinese)
  • Experience with MS Office software
